Happy Thanksgiving

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend and enjoyed time with your friends and family! We went to visit my parents in San Ardo. On the way I had fun art journaling in the car and playing with my new “Project Life App” by Becky Higgins.

San Ardo is a tiny town North of Paso Robles and suits my parents perfectly. Although the population on the sign says 576, most of the people have moved away and there’s only about 150 left.

My parents are growing tomatoes, watermelon, green peppers and pumpkins in the yard.

My dad has a ton of boxes and he kept some of my old Sandman comics from when I was a kid. It was awesome to grab a few of them.

Be grateful for every second of every day that you get to spend with the people you love. Life is so precious.

It was a rewarding experience reflecting on all the things in life to be thankful for. I hope to continue this practice past Thanksgiving. Thank you for sharing the journey with me.

Day 10 – Gratitude Can Turn a Negative Into a Positive

Day 10 – Gratitude Can Turn a Negative Into a Positive

Our reaction to a situation literally has the power to change the situation itself.

I was on my lunch break when my dashboard started blinking the dreaded sign that indicates I had a flat tire. When I pulled over to the side of the road a wave of emotions passed though me in the blink of an eye.

– I can’t believe this is my third flat tire in 4 weeks!

– I have a meeting in 20 minutes… I don’t have time for this AGAIN

– I’m going to have a nervous breakdown. This is ridiculous.

It’s amazing how you can be “going” through your day and then something stops you dead in your tracks and you must change course. I was completely overwhelmed with yet another flat tire but instead of letting it ruin my entire day, I decided to go on a shopping spree.

Day 9 – Be Thankful For the Setbacks

A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who
Are also thankful for the setbacks.

We all have setbacks in our life, terrible events that occur and shake everything up. Usually as time passes, we are able to reflect on these moments of turmoil and see blessings of hope appear within the clouds of despair.

This is the best thing that could have happened

When one door closes another door opens. Sometimes it’s important to remember that everything happens for a reason and that I often won’t know the reason immediately.

This is the best thing that could have happened.

Day 7 – Be Thankful When You Are Tired & Weary

Be thankful when you are tired and weary,

Because it means you’ve made a difference.

Today’s quote was timely for me because I woke up completely tired, exhausted and drained of all my energy. Yesterday was busy with…

– 10 hour work day

– Invigorating gratitude art journal adventure lunch with Antonia and Brooke

– Worked-out with trainer at L.A. Fitness

– Intense evening meeting

– Blogged

She Made a Difference.

When I’m gone this is the legacy I want to leave the world, it is the phrase I want engraved on my tombstone. What if every year I was able to walk towards this direction and make a positive difference in each role of my life by being:

– A grateful person

– A duitful wife

– A spiritual woman

– A  leader who listens

– A supportive coworker

– A thoughtful daughter

– A helpful sister-in-law

– An inspirational teacher

Day 6 – Be Thankful for Your Mistakes

Be thankful for your mistakes.

They will teach you valuable lessons.

The most valuable lessons I’ve learned in life, I have learned from making my own mistakes. Of course it’s nice when I can learn from someone else’s mistakes and not repeat them myself, but it doesn’t quite sink into my brain the same way as messing something up on my own.

The best part of making mistakes is getting the opportunity to continue moving, learning and growing. Thomas Edison taught us that failing is actually a part of succeeding.

I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work. ― Thomas A. Edison

Sometimes the fear of making mistakes or failing can hold us back in a monumental way.

What’s the worst thing that can happen in any situation?

This is the question I try to ask myself whenever fear keeps me from acting. If I allow fear to rule my actions then I would never get to where I’m going. The truth is most of the time the worst case scenario never happens and my overactive imagination can make me think things are worst than they are. Last night during our Conquer Summit session with Tahani Aburaneh we discussed our goals and the following self reflection questions:

What scares you the most about taking the leap to follow your dreams?

What is the worst case scenario if it doesn’t work out?

What is keeping you stuck and holding you back?

Overwhelming the biggest thing that holds people back is the fear of failure.

I have found that when I actively choose to approach situations with the mindset that I plan on making mistakes and failing before I succeed, my shortcomings are never as bad as I imagine. More often than not I end up surprising myself because I take that initial chance to fail and then when I do make mistakes I pick myself back up and try my best to learn the precious lessons within them.

Day 5 – Be Thankful for Each New Challenge

Be thankful for each new challenge,

Because it will build your strength and character.

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!

When I was in college I wrote a paper on resiliency in children. I wanted to determine why some children are resilient in challenging circumstances while other children are not. The fundamental premise I was trying to answer was whether the child’s success was a result of “nature” vs. “nurture.” In other words, did the child succeed because of genetics (i.e. nature) or because they had someone in their life that lifted them up (i.e. nurture). My conclusion after researching many resilient kids from a variety of countries and backgrounds was that it was a little bit of both.

However, the one trait they all had in common was a positive outlook on their circumstances and they built their character on the foundation of the challenges they were able to overcome.

A positive outlook on circumstances

1. The capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.

I know each challenge I’ve experienced in my life and have overcome has grown my strength and character. Each obstacle I’ve overturned has moved me closer to where I want to be and has strengthened my competence, confidence, and courage.

Day 4 – Be Thankful for Your Limitations

Be thankful for your limitations,

Because they give you opportunities for improvement.

I identified the following 5 limitations that have shown up in my life in various ways.

  1. Chaotic
  2. Impatient
  3. Impulsive
  4. Mistrustful
  5. Undisciplined

Then I determined an opportunity within each perceived limitation.

  1. My chaotic way of scrapbooking and crafting provides me opportunities for creativity because I get everything out all at once and can see from a different perspective.
  2. My impatience fuels my initiative. I don’t sit still waiting for something to happen, instead I take action.
  3. My impulsive nature compels me to get out of my comfort zone and try new things. This makes a lot of sense because I’m a life sampler!
  4. My mistrustful nature drives me to be detail oriented.
  5. Because I can be undisciplined I don’t see boundaries the same as others. I enjoy being messy, pushing the envelope and being a free spirit.

Here’s a couple pages from my gratitude journal:
