Let’s face it, the first time is a really big deal for every woman and it’s one that she’ll always remember… The anxiety… The anticipation… I remember my first time like it was yesterday…

Hey!  Not that first time!  I’m talking about the first time you organize a scrapbook retreat!

Recently Scrap Diva Angela had her “first time” experience organizing a retreat and she was kind enough to share her experiences and creativity with me, and since she did such a fantastic job organizing and shared some really great ideas, I’d like to share her story with you.  Her story has some great practical advice and some fun projects to help your group bond and have an enjoyable retreat. After all, a retreat is supposed to fuel your creativity and nourish your soul. How to Organize an Amazing Scrapbook Retreat: Written by Angela:

Once I agreed to organize a retreat, which I had never done, the panic set in.  I was determined that this retreat would be enjoyable for everyone and stress free.  Therefore, I was very selective of the women who were invited.

Then the questions and panic set in.  What am I supposed to do? How am I supposed to do it?  The questions floating around in my head were endless.  Once I took a step back and stopped worrying, a few ideas began to surface.

The first thing I did was call us a group of  “Women In Need Of Serenity” aka W.I.N.O.S.  WINOSOnce this happened, I made a closed Facebook page just for retreat attendees. This was the easiest way for us to communicate with the each other.

The majority of us knew each other. However, a few of only knew one or two of the ladies. So I decided to host a meet and greet at a winery in Temecula.  Where else would it be?  After all we are WINOS, right?

I began posting “getting to know you questions” on the FB page and encouraged everyone to participate. Prior to the luncheon I made pocket cards.  Inside each card was a name and the answers to the “getting to know you questions”.  I threatened to ground anyone who didn’t answer the questions.  Once the threat was made I was amazed at how fast I got answers. LOL.  Each of our ladies was given one of these with instructions not to open it because the name inside was their secret pal.  They were all asked to make a pocket letter to be given to their secret pals the 1st day of the retreat. I also gave each person a decorated card.  This was to be used as a focal point for a layout to commemorate our retreat.  These two “homework” assignments turned out to be loads of fun.

I then tackled the art of etching glass.  I made each of our ladies a wine glass with our logo W.I.N.O.S.  with either a butterfly, humming bird, or flower etched on it.   After trying this I thought for a moment I’d lost my mind.  Once I got the hang of it and replaced a couple of the glasses they turned out great.   Thank goodness for the Dollar Tree. I also made goody bags, which were wine themed as well.

Another thing I did was arrange for a discount at our local scrapbook store and scheduled a “field trip” to Old Town Temecula.  Rather than worry about lunch the first day we all shopped and went to “The Bank” for lunch and margaritas.  Needless to say the letting your hair down started as we made our deposits.  Just so you know, what was once a bank is now a Mexican food restaurant.Angie's Divas

Once we returned from our field trip and got settled in we had the great reveal of the secret pals.  Once all was revealed the giggles, oohs and aahs lasted for quite a while.  We all had such a good time appreciating each lady’s artistic style and ability. The majority of us had never made a pocket letter, including me.

Once the layouts were revealed on day two more oohs and aahs.  Each layout was gorgeous.  With so much talent in one place for four days we all learned a little something.

With the help and camaraderie of this very special group of ladies the retreat was a huge success. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of ladies.  The retreat turned out better than I hoped or imagined.  I was quite surprised by these ladies.  Several ladies brought lovely hand crafted gifts for everyone in attendance.

I became very teary as several gifts and cards were handed to me to say thank you for organizing such a nice retreat.  I get teary every time I think about it or look at a card or gift.  These are the things that make it all worthwhile and memorable.  I will never forget those 4 days.

As you read this I hope you will not be afraid of organizing a retreat.  We all had a great time and are already waiting for the new schedule to come out.   Hint, hint Kelly.
